Wing: The wing
is made in one piece with a 1.5 meter / ~ 59" projected span.
It has 1.7 oz. Kevlar skin foam cores, and Kevlar reinforcements
in all key areas. Hard points are embedded into the wing centerline.
Wiring channels are pre-bored inside the wing, reaching from the
auto-connector point to the flaperon servo locations. Tip reinforcements
are embedded on the throwing side, and are specified for right or
left hand thrower at the time of order. The throwing tip has larger
Kevlar doublers and internal carbon patches to support the throwing
blade or peg. The blade reinforcements are two layers each top and
bottom, installed into the lay-up just aft of the spar and generously
sized, allowing blade installation as far back as 10mm in front
of the hinge line or as far forward as the spar rods. The wing comes
with leading edges prepared, trailing edges trimmed, and hinges
cut and ready for control installation. You cut servo holes as appropriate
for your chosen servo, inboard under the amply reinforced center
area.
Pod and Boom:
The new pod makes everything very easy to install. Pod parts are
mold-formed into the whole body and nose cone. This is different
from the joggle gasketed half shells of the SG-II. A rear hatch
eases access to the inside for installation.
The pod installs inside instead of around the boom. The pod comes
already mounted to the boom, with pylon reinforcements and threaded
pylons installed. A lightweight stab mount for the articulated stab
is manufactured onto the boom for ultra-lightweight mounting.
The pylons extensions below the fuse are left intact. These extensions
plug into an alignment jig, facilitating easy assembly and set-up.
Then you cut them off and sand flush to the boom.
Tails: White
Spyderfoam and 1 oz. Kevlar composite stab and rudder, hinged and
ready for installation. The rudder is assymetrical to help counteract
yaw, and specified for right or left hand throwers at time of order.
Additional Components:
Throwing blade, .014 stainless elevator pushrod with Teflon housing,
.018 stainless steel rudder pushrod with Teflon housing. Flaperon
control horns (standard, not with the RDS option). Tail control
horns.
Assembly
Structural completion is simple: Mount the wing onto the ready
pylons, mount the rudder, and mount the stab. All other airframe
steps are completed. Then install your gear and the provided control
hardware.
The kit comes with a useful assembly jig to easily align the wing
and tails during mounting. The pylons have extensions through the
boom that fit into holes in the jig, setting the fusepod perpendicular
to your building table. Most people can complete the structural
assembly in about 2 hours.
There are easy step-by-step
instructions for assembly and installation of electronics and
controls. These steps parallel and consolidate already published
information on assembling the Super Gee II, with some variation
appropriate to the LightSpeed.
